VA Health Care Eligibility & Enrollment

Information About Enrollment

To apply for VA health care benefits, including enrollment you must fill out an application for enrollment, VA Form 10-10EZ. You may obtain this form by:

  • Accessing our web site,
    www.va.gov/1010EZ.htm    , or
  • Visiting, calling or writing any VA health care facility or Veterans Benefits Office, or
  • Calling VA Health Resource Center, toll-free at 877-222-VETS(8387), Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. eastern.

We use the application to determine:

  • Whether you have qualifying service as a veteran
  • What your veteran status is so that you can be placed into one of the Enrollment Priority Groups

The new PG 8 Relaxation Income Thresholds:

For more information on how to apply, go to www.va.gov/healtheligibility/application/. Once enrolled, most veterans remain enrolled from year to year without further action on their part. However,

  • Some veterans need to provide updated financial information to continue their enrollment in a certain Priority Group
  • You may cancel your enrollment anytime

* Enrollment Restriction:
In order to ensure the availability of quality and timely health care to veterans with service connected conditions, special authority based on military service, low income, and those with special health care needs, in January 2003 VA made the difficult decision to stop enrolling new Priority Group 8 (high income) veterans whose income exceeded VA Income Thresholds.

The new regulations went into effect on June 15, 2009 and enable the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to relax income restrictions on enrollment for health benefits. While this new provision does not remove consideration of income, it does increase income thresholds. You may be eligible for enrollment under this new provision.

Changes in VA’s available resources may reduce the number of priority groups VA can enroll in a given year. If that occurs, VA will publicize the enrollment changes and notify affected enrollees.
