Betty Jo Kramer, PhD, Selected as Recipient of VA’s 2013 David Worthen Award for Career Achievement in Educational Excellence
Betty Jo Kramer, PhD, Director for Education and Evaluation of the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, has been selected to receive VA’s highest recognition of academic accomplishments, the David M. Worthen Award for Career Achievement in Educational Excellence for 2013.
Dr. Kramer’s contributions to education and training in the area of geriatric medicine are notable. These contributions have emerged from her work as a VA-based educator. Among her most important contributions is the Geriatric Scholars Program that has transformed care for older Veterans in Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT) through the program that she developed. This program has addressed the need to equip and empower primary care clinicians with the skill and competencies to effectively manage their older patients. This contribution is complemented by a broad array of educational products that can be attributed to Dr. Kramer, including pocket guides for geriatric assessment and falls. Dr. Kramer is a productive educator, collaborator, and innovative thinker whose work has had a profound impact on the training of health professionals in the area of geriatrics and the care of our Nation’s Veterans.
Implications: The Worthen Award recognizes a VHA employee from any health care discipline who has made contributions of national significance to education in the health professions. This award, which was first issued in 1988, commemorates David M. Worthen, MD, an inspirational leader of VA’s education mission. It also serves to highlight the important contributions made by VHA staff to the education mission of VA.
