Please note that many OIG reports are available to the public and are published on our reports page and they can be easily downloaded and printed.

Requesting Records from the OIG

In order to make a request under the FOIA/PA for records maintained by the VA Office of Inspector General, your request:

  1. Should be in writing,
  2. should be signed (if the request concerns documents involving a personal privacy interest or documents protected by another confidentiality statute),
  3. should reasonably describe the information you are seeking (including any specific information such as a report number or hotline number), and
  4. should be mailed to the following address:

Other Records Requests

If you are seeking copies of military records, (including personnel and military medical records) or VA health records, please note that the VA OIG is not the appropriate office to make that request of.  We hope the following information is helpful to you in requesting those records:

Military Records

If you are seeking a copy of your military records, you can request those records from the National Personnel Records Center.

VA Benefits

If you are seeking information about VA benefits (claims, pensions, disability rating, guaranteed home loan, etc., ) you should contact the Veterans Benefits Administration

VA Health Issues

If you are seeking information about VA health care, or your personal VA medical records, please direct your request to the Veterans Health Administration.

Memorial Affairs

If you are seeking information about VA’s memorial affairs, you should direct your request to the Veterans Cemetery Administration.

Other Inquiries

If you are unclear what VA office maintains the records you are seeking, your request should be submitted to the Department of Veterans Affairs FOIA officer who will direct your request to the appropriate office(s);
